The Nexus-Ness Service (NNS)

The NNS, the Service, will be developed and demonstrated as a WEFE Nexus operational Service to empower stakeholders in tackling WEFE Nexus challenges (following the same path that Climate modelling pursued towards the existing Climate Services) at different spatial and time scales. Some sample challenges that the NNS application would tackle are:
– very short term (weekly time scale) actionable information supporting prompt and informed actions by farmers to respond or anticipate raising irrigation issues (e.g. inform farmers they should stop or diminish water pumping and use alternate sources);
– short-term (monthly scale) actionable information for Water Management Authorities or Utilities supporting actions to optimize reservoir operations of multi-purpose dams in order to maximise conjunctive use of surface and groundwater and in response to a drought or flood period (e.g. pre-allocate stored water for irrigation);
– short-term (monthly scale) actionable information for farmers to avoid the impact of salinization in water bodies affecting crop production;
– medium-term (yearly scale, 1-3 years) actionable information for land/water management authorities prompting more restricting permitting land/urban transformations when analyzing land degradation that are over-impacting water quality and ecosystem services;
– long-term (multi-year scale, 5 to 10 years) actionable information for policy makers when assessing incoherences in policies and, thus, prompting an update of conflicting policy provisions or supporting regional water/land, agricultural sector management agencies to promote novel regulations and guidelines for avoiding conflicts in water allocations, to control land use (e.g. biomass) for renewable energy production.
