The NEXUS-NESS Project meeting took place in Alexandria, Egypt, from January 21-23, 2025. This general asssembly provided a crucial step towards the end of the project with partners sharing latest progresses and refine outcomes of the WEFE Nexus transition in the Egypt Nexus Ecosystem Lab as well as in the other three NELs.
Field Trip to Egyptian NEL – Wadi Naghamish
The first day was dedicated to a filed trip to Marsa Matrouh, where participants visisted key sites, including a Bedouin village with their rainwater harvesting systems and cisterns, the automatic weather station, olive and fig plantations and collection and sedimentation basins. Partners and stakeholders assesed on site the NEXUS-NESS solutions and challenges with focus on non conventional water management and sustainable crop production implemented within the project.

Over the following two days, January 22 and 23, the NEXUS-NESS General Assembly was held at Alexandria University. A welcome address was delivered by Prof. Mohamed Bahnassy from Alexandria University, followed by remarks from Professor Heba Attia Salama, Vice Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Research, and Professor Mohamed Gamal Atwa, Vice Dean for Environmental Development and Community Services. Project Coordinator Fernando Nardi (Università per Stranieri di Perugia) introduced the Executive Board meeting, outlining the agenda and key objectives.
The key topics covered in the meeting include the latest developments from the Nexus Ecosystem Labs (NELs), advancements in the Nexus-Ness Geoservice, progress on WEFE (Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem) Nexus Management Plans, and the refinement of WEFE Nexus indicators. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in enhancing integrated resource management and sustainability within the Nexus framework. This meeting was organized as part of the last semester of this long and beautiful four-year project, which will come to an end in a few months.
