The first Italian NEL workshop was held in Venturina at Terre dell’Etruria (Venturina, Livorno) premises on June 29 2022. The meeting marked the beginning of the NEXUS participatory activities. A large number of stakeholders participated in the meeting including the majors of Suvereto Jessica Pasquini and Campiglia Marittima Alberta Ticciati, and personnel of farmer’s associations (Confagricoltura, xx), regional authorities, technical entities (Consorzio di Bonifica Toscana Costa, ASA spa), and environmental associations (WWF and Legambiente). The meeting started with a brief introduction on the NEXUS-NESS project made by Rudy Rossetto (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna) and followed by a presentation on Precision agriculture and sustainability of cropping systems made by Prof. Luca Sebastiani (Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna). Stefania Nuvoli (Regione Toscana) then provided insights on  the status of irrigation in Tuscany. Enrico Lucca (Università di Firenze) introduced the gender issues in the meeting.

The bulk of the workshop was dedicated to identify in a series of three tables the main challenges to reach sustainability in Val di Cornia in terms of water and energy resources, and agricultural production, and a series of actions and solutions to target these challenges.

All the stakeholders provided enthusiastic and interactive participation and relevant input for the work to be done in the NEXUS-NESS project.

All these input were taken by the Scuola Sant’Anna team of the Crop Science Research Center and further developed and discussed in the second workshop planned for November the 4th 2022.
